Subject: Deafening Silence
Canada Palestine Association

29 March 2002
The Hon. Mr. Bill Graham
Minister of Foreign affairs
Dear Mr. Graham:
Israeli flagrant aggression against the Palestinian people
and the Palestinian authority is ongoing, demolishing the infrastructure of the
Palestinian Authority and humiliating its leadership, and using its massive
military power to kill innocent civilians with continiuing violation of
Palestinian human rights. All this goes on and we hear nothing but a
deafening silence from our Government.
We condemn the killing of all innocent civilians, be they
Israeli or Palestinians. But the root cause of all this killing
and strife is the continuing illegal Israeli occupation of
Palestinian territory that has been allowed to stand for 35 years in
defiance of international law and Security Council resolutions. The Palestinian
people are being subjected to an oppressive occupation, where they see their
homes demolished, their land expropriated and they are subjected to daily
humiliation. This occupation is blatant terrorism, and the
Palestinian people are being deprived of any hope of attaining their basic human
rights and their right to self determination.
The only way to bring this killing and suffering to
an end and to bring peace and security for both peoples is to obtain
immediate complete and unconditional termination of this illegal
occupation, in compliance with international law.
We call on our Government to practice what we claim to
uphold as intrnataional legitimacy and call , together with the international
community, on Israel to terminate forthwith its illegal occupation,
and stop its use of brutal force in the subjugation of the Palestinian
people, who are calling for justice. The recent peace proposal by the Arab
countries deserves the full support of all those who claim to care for
upholding the UN Charter and international law, including Canada.
Ismail Zayid, M.D.
President, Canada Palestine Association.
