Subject: Plea for human rights.
P.O.Box,
1085,
The Right Honourable Mr. Michael Ignatieff, MP.
Leader of
the Liberal Party,
House of
Commons,
Dear Mr. Ignatieff:
We wish to
congratulate you on your election to the leadership of the Liberal Party of
Canada, a role, we trust, will carry with it a committment
to uphold and promote liberal values as we understand them in Canada and
universally. That this took place today, on the 60th.
anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human
Rights, we trust, will carry with it a special resolve to defend and stand
courageously with the human rights of people, throughout the world, whose human
rights are being violated.
We wish to
draw your attention, in particular, to the brutal and inhuman blockade that is
being imposed, by the Israeli government, on the defenceless
1.5 million men, women and children in Gaza, who are being denied food, water,
fuel, electric power, medicines and all elements of basic humanitarian
needs. These actions are in violation of the principles of the Universal
Declaration of Human Rights and the Fourth Geneva Convention, and are
tantamount to war crimes as determined by international law. These Israeli
policies have been condemned by all international human rights organisations, including Amnesty International, Human
Rights Watch and Israeli human rights organisations,
including B'Tselem and Association for Civil Rights
in
We plead
with you to take the necessary political action to bring to an end these
genocidal practices against innocent people and to call clearly for the
termination of the brutal illegal Israeli occupation of the Occupied
Palestinian Territories, an occupation that has been allowed to stand for more
than 40 years, in defiance of international law and repeated Security Council
resolutions.
We look
forward to hearing your response to this plea for action against this
humanitarian crisis, that is calling for immediate
action.
Yours
sincerely,
President,
