The Right Hon. Mr. Paul Martin, MP
Prime Minister,
Ottawa.

Dear Mr. Martin:

In your interview with Linda Frum [ National Post, May 8], you responded to her question, " Do you think it was acceptable, on moral grounds, for Israel to kill the leader of Hamas, Sheikh Yassin?", by stating that " I think that Israel has the right to defend itself." We find this response astonishing. Israel is in illegal occupation of Palestinian land, that has been allowed to stand for decades in defiance of international law and repeated Security Council resolutions. Israeli practices, during this occupation, have included extrajudicial assassination, detention of thousands without charge or trial, torture, daily humiliation, illegal expropriation of Palestinian land for the creation of illegal Jewish settlements and demolition of thousands of homes, including entire towns and villages, including Imwas[Emmaus], Yalu and Beit Nuba [my own hometown], at the site of these villages stands today the infamy called Canada Park, built with Canadian tax-deductible dollars. All these practices are in violation of the Fourth Geneva Convention, and thus defined by international law as war crimes.

As to her question about 'moral grounds', since when does extrajudicial assassination require 'debates in moral theology', as you suggest? Extrajudicial assassination violates the basic principles of justice and human rights and requires no debate.

The UN Charter and UN resolution #2787 entitle all peoples, including even the Palestinian people, to resist foreign occupation. If Israel truly cares about the security of its citizens, all it needs to do is terminate its illegal occupation, and thus secure peace and security for both the Israeli and Palestinian peoples.

Our country prides itself on upholding the UN Charter, international law and universal human rights. Accordingly, we believe that our government should be calling for immediate and complete termination of Israeli illegal occupation of Palestinian and Syrian land.

Yours sincerely,

Ismail Zayid, MD.
President, Canada Palestine Association.
