Subject: UN credibility and double standards.

May 7,2002

The Editor,
The Guardian weekly.

Dear Editor:

Brian Whitaker { " Israel blocks UN mission to Jenin" May 2} refers, in passing, to Israeli rejection of the UN Fact-finding Mission to investigate the war crimes and killing, in Jenin, reported by many international and Israeli human rights groups. The UN acquiescence to this act of defiance to Security Council resolution is surprising if not pathetic.

It may be of interest to recall that the US and UK are talking of preparations for war against Iraq, for its refusal to allow UN inspectors to return to Iraq, based on a similar UN Security Council resolution. Are we, hence, to expect US and UK plans for war or sanctions against Israel ?!!

How long must Israel be allowed to remain above international law, and how long will this practice of double standards continue?

Yours sincerely,

 Ismail Zayid, M.D.
