Occupation must end

Dear Editor:

Fran Morrison (May 1 letter) is telling us that because other countries have, or may have, committed war crimes in the past, we must give carte blanche to Israel to continue its war crimes that have been committed for decades, and continue to be committed against the Palestinian people. The CNN cameras that Fran Morrison sees are clearly not the ones seen by the rest of the world.

Israel's defiance of the UN and international law, in rejecting the UN fact-finding commission, will, needless to say, go unpunished because of U.S. bias. For Iraq's refusal to allow admission of UN inspectors, the U.S. and its allies are preparing to wage war against Iraq.

Those who talk about Israeli acts of self-defence and self-control forget that Israel has been in illegal occupation of Palestinian territories for 35 years, in defiance of international law and repeated Security Council resolutions. This occupation has been maintained with continuing violation of all articles of the Fourth Geneva Convention, including murder, demolition of thousands of homes, expropriation of property and creation of illegal settlements. These violations are war crimes in the eyes of international law and have been condemned by all international bodies, including Israeli human rights groups.

People of conscience should call for complete termination of this illegal occupation, so peace and security can be attained for Palestinians and Israelis.
