Subject: Terror 9n the Middle East

The Editor, TIME

Dear Editor:

In your issue {"Terror in the Middle East" Oct. 23}, Mr. Ehud Barak states:" We are acting in self defense. We do not initiate". Let us remind him, and his U.S. ally, which claims to uphold international law and the U.N. Charter, that the cause of this terror is the illegal Israeli occupation of the West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem which has been allowed to continue for 33 years, in defiance of international law and Security Council resolutions.

Implementation of Security Council resolutions is vital and requires no negotiation or bargaining. This is the practice that was adopted against Iraq’s illegal occupation of Kuwait. How long must Israel be allowed to remain above international law?

Yours sincerely

Ismail Zayid, M.D.
