The Right Hon. Mr. Jean Chretien,

The Prime Minister, Ottawa

Feb. 16, 2001

Dear Mr. Chretien:

Today's bombing attack on Baghdad, by the US and Britain, killing and injuring civilians, is another act of aggression that stands in violation of the UN Charter and international law. As you are aware, there is no legitimacy for this action anymore than there is any legitimacy for subjecting the innocent millions of Iraqi civilians and children to starvation and disease, as a result of the continuing economic sanctions against Iraq. Furthermore , the immense rise in the incidence of leukemia and cancer amongst Iraqi children, as a result of their continuing exposure to the depleted uranium effects for the last 10 years, is a war crime.

We were told, in the recent Speech from the Throne, that our government will pay special attention to the humanitarian interests and welfare of children. Do we understand that Iraqi children are less than human?

Finally, sir, we call on our government to condemn this recent bombing attack and join other countries in bringing the sanctions to an end.

Yours sincerely

Ismail Zayid, MD.

President, Canada Palestine Association.
