The Editor,
Maclean's Magazine

Dear Editor:

Anna Porter in her article {"A World of Fear and Horror" Aug. 5} displays a catalogue of biased distortion of facts. The people of Ramallah, East Jerusalem and Gaza, that she talks about, have been subjected to an oppressive illegal occupation, that has been allowed to stand for 35 years, in defiance of international law and repeated Security Council resolutions. The Palestinians have been subjected to daily humiliation, imprisonment without charge or trial, torture, extra-judicial execution, demolition of thousands of their homes, expropriation of their land for the creation of illegal Jewish settlements and the uprooting of tens of thousands of their trees, all in violation of virtually every article of the Fourth Geneva Convention. These war crimes have been condemned by Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, the UN Human Rights Commission and the Israeli League for Human and Civil Rights and the Israeli human rights group,B'Tselem.

She relates how hundreds of Israelis have been murdered, but omits to relate how thousnds of Palestinians have been murdered by Israeli forces using their mighty armaments against a largely defenceless population. The desperate and hopeless young Palestinians who, and their parents, are subjected to daily humiliation and degradation, having no F16's and Apache gunships, commit these abhorent acts of suicide bombing. Perhaps it is relevant to point out that international law and the UN Charter entitles all peoples under foreign occupation, including even the Palestinan people,  to resist foreign occupation.

For Israelis and Palestinians to have security and peace, there must be Israeli complete termination of the occupation and compliance with UN resolutions. Israel must not be allowed to remain above international law.

Yours Sincerely

Ismail Zayid, M.D.
