The Hon. Mr. Art Eggleton,M.P.
The House of Commons.
Dear Mr. Eggleton:
Your comment, in The House of Commons, on the statement
made by The Hon. Mr. Pat O'Brien, is lacking in factual content.
You state: " We have to remember the realities that have forced
Israel to build its 'protective barrier'[sic]". Yes, indeed, we have to
remember these realities. Israel stands today, and for 37 years, in illegal
occupation of Palestinian territories, in violation of
international law and repeated Security Council resolutions. During this
period, the Palestinian people have been subjected to the most oppressive
practices, including extra-judicial assassination, detention without charge or
trial, torture, daily humiliation, demolition of thousands of their homes and
expropriation of their property, for the creation of illegal Jewish
settlements, in violation of international law and the Fourth Geneva
Convention, and defined by international law as war crimes.
These practices have been condemned by all international human rights
organisations, including the UN Human Rights Commission, International
Committee of Red Cross, Amnesty International and
Israeli human rights groups, including B'Tselem, Gush Shalom and
Israeli League for Human and Civil Rights. The description of
the conditions the Palestinians are made to live under, as 'concentration
camps', is the reality that you are unable to see. It is a
description that has been applied to the suffocating encirclement, that the
Palestinians live under, by many of the human rights groups mentioned
above.
You speak of Israeli casualties, but
make no mention of many more Palestinian casualties, who do not seem to matter
in your calculations.
If Israel truly wants to ensure security for its citizens, all it
has to do is to terminate immediately and completely its illegal occupation
of Palestinian land, that has been allowed to stand for 37
years. This has been allowed to continue because of the hyopcritical
policies of the powers that claim to be the leaders of the free world and
advocates of democracy and human rights.
Our country, Canada, brags about upholding the UN Charter and human
rights, yet, sadly, we see some of our political leaders continue to defend
Israeli oppressive practices and violation of international law. We call on our
government, and Israel's apologists, to practice what they claim and adhere to
the principle of the humanity of all peoples, regardless of their ethnicity or
religious affiliation.
Yours sincerely,
Ismail Zayid, M.D.
President, Canada Palestine Association.
