Subject: Is Israel above international law?

Jan. 8,2003
The Editor,
National Post.
Dear Editor:
It is Mr. Larry Altman {Letter Jan.8} who needs to look at the basic historic fact in the Middle East and Israeli policies. Israel is maintaining, for 35 years, an oppressive illegal occupation of Palestinian, Syrian and Lebanese territory. This occupation stands in defiance of international law and repeated Security Council resolutions. Israeli oppressive practices, in these occupied territories, include detention without charge or trial, torture, extra-judicial assassination, demolition of thousands of homes, including entire villages, like Imwas, Yalu and Beit Nuba [my own hometown], expropriation of property and creation of illegal Jewish settlements. All these actions are in clear violation of the Fourth Geneva Convention, and thus tantamount to war crimes. These actions have been condemned by all international human rights organisations, including Amnesty International, UN Human Rights Commission, Human Rights Watch and Israeli human rights organisations, including Israeli League for Human and Civil Rights and B'Tselem human rights group.
It is heartening to see some of our politicians, like Joe Comartin, who have the courage and integrity to tell it as it is. How long must Israel be allowed to remain above international law ?
Yours sincerely
Ismail Zayid,MD.
