For a
lawyer who claims to stand for human rights, your speech, at the Holy Blossom
Temple, displays complete disregard for international law and any concern for
the human rights of the Palestinian people, who have been under a brutal
illegal Israeli occupation for over 40 years in defiance of international law
and repeated Security Council resolutions. Israeli practices, throughout this
illegal occupation, include extra-judicial execution, detention of thousands
without charge or trial, torture, daily humiliation, denial of health
care, demolition of thousands of homes and expropriation of property for
the creation of illegal Jewish settlements. All these actions are in violation
of virtually every article of the Fourth
Geneva Convention and are identified by international law as war crimes, and they have been
identified as such and condemned by all international human rights organisations, including Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch and Israeli human rights groups
including B'Tselem.
Your
plea for forgiveness for stating that Israeli actions in Qana were
a war crime, is totally out of place. Over a thousand
Lebanese, overwhelmingly innocent civilians, were
killed in that war that Israelwaged in 2006 and destroyed
the infrastructure of South Lebanon and demolished
hundreds of homes and public structures. These actions are war crimes,
as defined by international law, which you clearly pay no heed to.
The pride
you claim in having shared values with Israel is your privilege, but is not
deemed as such by many Israelis and Jews who have the courage and integrity to
tell it as it is.
You speak
of the role your father played in bringing about the partition scheme of
1947 to partition Palestine into a Jewish state and an Arab
state. Yes, the Arabs rejected that scheme because it was utterly unjust and
illegal. On the 29th.of Nov.
1947, when the UNGA resolution #181 was passed, Palestinian Jews numbered 31%
of the population, mostly recent and illegal immigrants, and owned 5.6% of the
land in Palestine. Yet that great resolution, that your father participated
in constructing, gave to the Jewish state 56% of the land and to the Muslim and
Christian Arab Palestinians who and their forefathers owned that land for
thousands of years were apportioned 42% of the land and Jerusalem, as an
independent international unit, 2% of the land. Is that the justice that you
are proudly bringing out?
I think,
Mr. Magnitieff, it is time that you and all Israel's
apologists begin to pay heed to the UN Charter, international law and
justice, so as to bring about a just peace with assured security for Jews,
Muslims and Christians in that tortured land.
