The Hon. Mr. John Manley,
Minister of Foreign Affairs
Ottawa

7 Nov. 2000

Dear Mr. Manley:

We understand that our country abstained on a U.N. Committee resolution supporting the right of the Palestinian people to self determination. This right is in accordance with the International Covenants on Human Rights, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the U.N. Charter and other recognised international covenants.

We also understand that this resolution was supported by 147 countries, opposed only by Israel and its consistent client, the U.S. with abstentions from The Marshall Islands, Tonga and Canada.

This is truly stunning. We have always been led to believe that our country upholds international law and the U.N. Charter, regardless of political considerations. We believe that our country deserves better than the standing this vote puts us in..

Yours sincerely

Ismail Zayid, M.D.
