Subject: Where was the restraint?

Dear Editor:

The Globe & Mail columnists {Uri Dromi's " Israeli Unity is a myth" Mar. 1} are amazingly blind to the facts. Mr. Dromi speaks in praise of Barak's "restraint". During his 18 month government, Barak doubled the number of illegal settlers of the previous 30 years, and exceeded, by far, Netanyahu's record in the demolition of Palestinian homes.

Mr. Dromi speaks of Arafat's "endless haggling". What the Palestinians are asking for is simple Israeli compliance with international law and repeated Security Council resolutions, requiring complete Israeli withdrawal from the illegally occupied territories of the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip and dismantlement of all settlements which are illegal and stand in defiance of Security Council resolutions and the Fourth Geneva Convention. Such compliance requires no haggling but simple implementation of international law.

Yours sincerely

Ismail Zayid, MD.
