Dear
Editor:
It is bewildering
how much illogic, contradictions and diatribe Mr. Marcus Gee can assemble
in one column :{The roots of the Intifada" March 15}
Every person with a
modicum of humanity and sincerity has come to understand that this
Intifada and the previous intifada,
and many recurrent acts of violence by the Palestinians, are a
simple human reaction to oppression, humiliation, and de-humanisation, to which
the Palestinians have been subjected for nearly 34 years. Mr. Gee questions the
severity of this oppressive occupation. Thousands of Palestinians have been
imprisoned without charge or trial, systematically tortured and scores died
under torture. Their land is continuously expropriated and thousands of their
homes are demolished, and they are murdered casually. Unlike Mr. Gee,
international and other human rights organisations corroborate this most
oppressive occupation, including Amnesty International, The
International Commission of Jurists, and Israel's B'Tselem
Human Rights Group, and the Israeli League for Civil and Human
Rights. Professor Israel Shahak, a Holocaust survivor and Chairman of
the Israeli League for Civil and Human Rights, described this
occupation in these words: " The Israeli occupation regime in the conquered
territories is not only not a liberal one [as someone described it], it is one
of the most cruel and repressive regimes in modern times".
However, it is time
that Messrs Gee and Robin remember that it is a legitimate right
for all people to resist foreign occupation,
even if they are Palestinians. It is also the humane
responsibility of others to support people against illegal occupation. We all
stood in support of the French and others who resisted foreign Nazi occupation.
This Israeli illegal occupation have been allowed to stand all this time,in
defiance of international law and repeated Security Council resolutions. It
must be brought to an end, if there is to be peace and security
for Arabs and Jews in the Middle East.
Yours
sincerely
Ismail Zayid,
MD.

Palestine Association.
