Dear Editor:
Dr. Gabor Mate’s article ["A lament for them and us" Nov. 1] expresses the courage and humanity of many Canadian, Israeli and other Jews, who oppose Israel’s illegal oppressive occupation that maintains a policy of de-humanization and dispossession of Palestinians. His quotation of Isaiah’s statement as to the futility of military might, brings to mind the verses from the prophet Micah, who might have been writing for today when he gave this warning:
" Hear this, you heads of the House of Jacob and rulers of the House of Israel, who abhor justice and pervert
all equity, who build Zion with blood and Jerusalem with wrong.....
Therefore because of you Zion shall be ploughed as a field; Jerusalem shall become a heap of ruins".
We hope and trust that there is still time to prevent that prophecy from coming true. To achieve that, we need more people like Gabor Mate’, who speak their conscience with courage and humanity, so that there will be peace for Arabs and Jews in the Middle East.
