Dear Editor:

For Mr Howse, in his editorial {"The war for the street" March 26},
to call Iraqis, defending their country against foreign invaders, as "thugs"
defies credibility. These people are not fighting for the abhorent dictator,
Saddam Hussein. They are defending their land against a blatant aggression,
committed in defiance of international law. Perhaps Mr. Howse should reflect on
Winston Churchill's dictum stating : " It is the right and duty of every man to
kill and die in defence of the land he lives on."

Yours sincerely
