The Right Hon. Mr. Jean Chretien

The Prime Minister,

Ottawa

18 Feb. 2001

Dear Mr. Chretien:

We read in the press, with extreme surprise, your statement condoning the illegal bombing of Baghdad, by the US & Britain. You state : " There is an agreement there, and when it's not respected, the enforcement of the agreement is done by the British and the Americans and they do it on their own without consulting with us". You appear to imply that there is an agreement with Iraq about the No fly zones, and Iraq is not respecting this agreement. You must know that there is no such agreement with Iraq on this score. Many nations including permanent members of Security Council, like Russia and China, state clearly that there is no Security Council resolution authorising the so-called "No Fly Zones", and the US and Britain have no right to impose such restrictions on Iraq, let alone bomb, virtually daily, sites in Iraq, killing and injuring innocent civilians. During the last two days, a number of British Labour Party members, of Mr. Blair's government party, have condemned this bombing attack and called it an act of international terrorism.

We call on our government to stand by its claim of upholding international law and to condemn these illegal acts causing death and injury to the innocent.

Yours sincerely

Ismail Zayid, MD.
